Educational Theory into Practice Software

Real-World Curriculum

ETIPS - Make Thinking Visible

Added Value

Technology use provides added value to teaching and learning. Educational technology does not possess inherent value but rather it offers immense potential when intentionally coupled with grounded planning and solid teaching. Technology should not be used as filler for lesson plans or as down time for the teacher but rather to enhance student learning on a particular topic. This resource area explores specific options for adding value to classroom through technology but is by no means an exhaustive list.

Added Value with Technology for Visual Arts Education
Access

Educational technology can increase access to people, perspectives, resources and current information. Many times the software interface design allows learner interaction or presents information in a multi-sensory format.

Accessing Information by using technology to:

  • Locate up-to-date information on art exhibitions, museum hours, events in the art world
  • Utilize authentic resources such as photographs of artists, artists writings, archives, and artifacts
  • Seek a variety of cultural perspectives, ex. Japanese aesthetics
  • Provide direct access to artists, art museums, arts community
  • Access databases in the art department and school
  • Monitor student progress and course information on a need-to-basis

Accessing Images by using technology to:

  • Locate art images from around the world
  • Visit virtual art museums
  • Search by categories of art work: artists, themes, subject, medium, styles
  • Create online art collections
  • Download and print art images

Accessing Training by using technology to:

  • Participate in teleconferencing and online training
  • Access online tutorials
  • Learn software applications from CD-ROMs
  • Engage in self-paced or individual instruction
  • Learn in a variety of environments, ex. wireless computing and Internet connectivity enables mobile experiences
Process

Educational technology can support students’ learning-by-doing, and aid them in constructing mental models, or making meaning, by scaffolding their thinking. For example, a database can allow students to compare, contrast and categorize information through query features.

Analyzing  information by using technology to:

  • Compare
  • Contrast
  • Categorize with concept maps

Synthesizing information by using technology to:

  • Summarize
  • Revise
  • Compose
  • Construct
  • Create
  • Synthesize

Evaluating information by using technology to:

  • Appraise
  • Compare
  • Conclude
  • Criticize
  • Assess
  • Evaluate
Communicate

With educational technology students are able to create more authentic and professional communication, in the style and format appropriate for the topic, to their peers or outside experts.

Presenting information by using technology to:

  • Allow interactivity in learning
  • Multisensory with multimedia
  • Select the image, motion, and sound for a customized presentation
  • Enables students to share their art work with a wider audience by using an online art gallery

Discussing information by using technology to:

  • Enable students to improve social, writing, communication and collaboration skills through online discussions
  • Provide opportunities for students to participate in a global discourse, allowing for development of a broader perspective
  • “Ask-the-expert”  in a real-time communication session
  • Conduct asynchronous conferencing with e-mail, listservs, bulletin boards, computer conferencing, and newsgroups therefore enabling students to become members of a broader community
  • Immediacy of live interactions provides motivation to contribute
  • Facilitate collaborative learning
  • Provide independence of time

Classroom Use Examples for Visual Arts

Old Meets New

Grade Level: Elementary

Added Value with Technology:

  • Access to authentic resources and experts
  • Facilitates efficiency of repetition of design to create pattern

  • Graphics Software like Kid Pix
  • Internet
  • Paper cutter
  • Japanese Origami patterned paper as examples
  • Solid color origami paper for bottom of box
  • Origami samples
  • E-mail optional

Introduction:

Students learn how to find information about origami on the World Wide Web. They combine the ancient art of origami with a contemporary art medium by designing patterned paper on the computer then folding it to create an origami box.

Learning Outcomes:

(This lesson is a variation that includes examples of the boxes.)
  2. Discuss decorative and functional purposes of art.
  3. Define Rhythm/Pattern as the principle of art that indicates movement by the repetition of elements.
  4. Show students patterned paper samples, and have them describe the motif or patterns.
  5. Demonstrate the several tools in Kid Pix that create repetition.
Students create at least two patterned designs that fill the screen with Kid Pix and save them in their networked folder (useful if time runs out before printing)
  6. Students select the best design that fits the criteria and follow printing procedures.
  7. Optional activities for students are to look at origami websites or e-mail an origami designer. Joseph Wu’s Origami Page http://www.origami.vancouver.bc.ca/

Day Two

  1. Cut printed paper into squares to match the size of the plain paper.
  2. Follow folding instructions on the web page or locate similar directions using the printed paper students created. Repeat with plain origami paper for the bottom of the box and fit together.
  3. Display boxes and discuss the successes and areas for improvement.
